Lumpy Ridge Trailhead
The Lumpy Ridge Trailhead inside Rocky Mountain National Park is where you’ll find the Lumpy Ridge Loop, a challenging but stunning hiking trail just north of Estes Park. The Lumpy Ridge Loop is considered a strenuous trail, so seasoned hikers should only attempt this excursion. Here, you’ll find an 11-mile roundtrip loop with a total elevation gain of nearly 2,500 feet.
As you make your way through the trail, you’ll get to see incredible rocks sculpted by millions of years of erosion. The views of the mountains along this trail are simply breathtaking, so be sure to bring your camera! You’ll also find MacGregor Ranch as you head along the path, offering tons of unique history and interesting artifacts from the area. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for colorful wildflowers along the trail, too!
Glacier Gorge Trail
If you’re looking for something challenging, the Glacier Gorge Trail will put you to the test. This 9.4-mile out-and-back trail is not for the faint of heart, but your efforts will be more than rewarded with the breathtaking views of the Rockies. Throughout this trial, you’ll experience an elevation gain of more than 1,700 feet.
Many hikers find that this trail is best experienced from June through October. You’ll have the chance to see incredible views of both the mountains and some local lakes, offering a little something for everyone. You’ll even be taken past a waterfall and can see some amazing plant life while you’re at it!
Copeland Falls
If you’re searching for an easier trail, Copeland Falls is a great option. This hike is less than a mile and has little to no incline, making it an excellent choice for families or groups with beginner hikers. As the name suggests, you’ll see some breathtaking waterfalls as you make your way through this trial, which is truly a feast for the eyes.
Are you looking for something slightly more challenging? You do have the option to continue along the Thunder Lake Trail, which will take you to Calypso Cascades. You’ll experience a bit of an include (only around 800 feet) and an extra 1.1 miles of trail. To get to Copeland Falls, you’ll want to start from the Wild Basin Trailhead toward the southeastern corner of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Lily Mountain Trailhead
One of the most popular moderate hikes near Estes Park, CO, starts from the Lily Mountain Trailhead, located around six miles south of Estes Park on Colorado Highway 7. This entire route will take hikers through Roosevelt National Forest for an incredible 4-mile roundtrip journey with around 1,200 feet of elevation gain.
Several times throughout your journey, you’ll come through areas that have previously been flooded but rest assured that these sections have been rebuilt and are easy and safe to navigate. You’ll get stunning views of the mountains and forests around you as you like, and when you make it to the summit, you’ll be rewarded with picturesque panoramic views of the mountains surrounding you. For intermediate hikers, this is one trail you won’t want to miss.
Balanced Rock
Finally, those seeking a moderate hike may also want to take the Gem Trail to Balanced Rock. This 7-mile out-and-back trail is recommended in the warmer months and is most popular from March through August. As you make your way through the trail, you’ll experience an elevation gain of nearly 1,700 feet.
Those interested in bird watching will be particularly pleased by this trail since there are usually tons of local bird species around for you to check out. You’ll, of course, also get to see the beautiful Gem Lake, for which the trail is named. There are some beautiful and peaceful views here, perfect for relaxing after a somewhat challenging trek to the lake.
